Know-how for safety

Safety is a permanent requirement for Fret SNCF. The objectives are not only to guarantee the safety of our clients’ merchandise, but also to ensure the safety of all parties concerned.

This is a daily concern in all of our operations. Safety is increasingly important in the transportation of dangerous goods. Fret SNCF has developed specialized expertise in this field.

Safety – a key advantage of rail transport

Rail has been proven to be one of the safest modes of transport. This is a key advantage over road haulage. This safety aspect is a fundamental aspect in decisions by public authorities in France and Europe to develop rail freight transport.

Safety in carrying dangerous goods – Fret SNCF’s expertise

In 2002, Fret SNCF carried 18.6 million tonnes of dangerous goods, accounting for 30% of the French market. Fret SNCF is responsible for 97% of spent nuclear fuel shipments and 20% of the new nuclear fuel market.

Definition
The term ‘dangerous goods’ refers to substances which due to their inherent characteristics may put the safety of persons or property in danger, and/or harm the environment. They are subject to specific international and national regulations, and in addition to some 30 SNCF internal rules.

A dedicated organization
Fret SNCF has established an organization entirely dedicated to carrying dangerous goods. This structure is based on several levels of intervention:
A coordination service responsible for monitoring the trains: it provides our clients with 24/7 real-time monitoring, and plays a key role in incident management,
A safety advisor for the carriage of dangerous goods, reporting directly to the delegated freight manager. This advisor ensures that regulations are distributed and respected. A network of regional experts assists the advisor.
A network of inspectors, specially trained to detect and deal with anomalies.

Collaboration with all players concerned
Fret SNCF works for continuing improvements in safety with its clients, emergency services, as well as its European counterparts and official organizations (relevant ministries and legal services).

In this way, Fret SNCF has contributed to a safety evaluation system with other European rail transport companies.
