Know-how for the environment
Rail transport offers certain clear advantages over other types of transport when it comes to respecting the environment. This is one of the main reasons French and European authorities are encouraging the development of freight shipment via rail. And though the ecological competitiveness of rail over road haulage is widely recognized, Fret SNCF continues to explore ways to decrease the environmental impact of its operations.

Everyone recognizes the environmental advantages of rail freight, which is the reason a growing number of clients are incorporating it into their sustainable development policies.
Rail is one of the most economical means of transport with energy efficiency 2 to 3 times better than shipment by road. This means that with an energy equivalent of 1 kg of petroleum per tonne of merchandise, a lorry will cover 58 kilometres while a train will travel 111.
Marginal greenhouse gas emissions:
- rail transport is responsible for only 1.3% of CO2 emissions resulting from transport in metropolitan France compared to 93% for the road,
- energy for the locomotives used by Fret SNCF is mostly electric and 90% comes from electricity production which does not produce greenhouse gases (nuclear 56.24% and hydro-electric 34.46%).
- rail transport is only slightly dependent on supplies of fossil fuels, such as petrol or diesel.
1,300 freight trains per day means 7.2 million fewer lorries on the road each year.
The Alpine rail-motorway will eventually contribute to replacing 300,000 lorries on the roads through the Alps.

| Fret SNCF committed to the environment |
 |
Fret SNCF participates in the SNCF groups actions to limit the environmental impact of our operations as much as possible.
In particular, this involves:
Renewing the fleet and adopting the cleanest solutions,
Making sure that the development of its operations is always carried out with respect to the local environment,
Reducing noise pollution.
Fret SNCF has also participated in the European EcoTransit
project, in collaboration with 5 other European rail transport companies.
This project led to the development of a software application which
allows comparison of the pollution levels produced by different types
of transport.
