In spite of unfavourable market conditions in 2002, Fret SNCF succeeded in maintaining its market share at 20.5%, against road haulage, and also maintained volumes close to 2001 levels, while other European rail companies recorded decreases.

Sales (2002 Figures)
Corporate sales for Fret SNCF: 1.96 billion euros,
Consolidated sales for the freight division: 6.62 billion euros.

Traffic (2002 Figures)
128 million tonnes shipped, or the equivalent of 7.2 million lorries,
20.5% of market share in France, compared to an average of 14% for other European countries,
50.03 billion metric-tonnes kilometres (number of tonnes carried multiplied by the number of kilometres travelled),
1,300 trains per day, half of which cross at least one European border,
50% of traffic is international, including 15% via ports.

5,000 companies directly linked by rail.

Infrastructure and logistics
1,800 freight stations throughout France,
19 marshalling yards,
4,535 private sidings (freight stations within client companies linked to the rail network)
3,500 hectares of siding zones linked to the rail network,
300 000 m2 of warehouses and platforms,
45 trans-shipment sites ;
2 hubs in France which concentrate the traffic flow, grouping trains coming from different yards, and sending them to destination yards, the PNIF (Paris Hub) and the PNEU (European Hub) which handle 185,000 and 150,000 wagons/year respectively.

Equipment
80,000 freight wagons are available within the SNCF group,
1,435 locomotives including 736 electric and 699 diesels for line and service and 997 loco-tractors.
