Container carriage
Fret SNCF carries containers throughout Europe in association with combined transport specialists, CNC and Novatrans.
Combined transport uses railways for the longest part of the itinerary and lorries for local terminal services at either end. This system makes the most of all the advantages of rail freight and the flexibiliity of road transport.

Combined transport accounts for 25% of Fret SNCFs traffic. In 2002, it amounted to a total of 12 billion tonne-kilometres, totalling 900,000 wagons transferred by nearly 1500 trains per week, the equivalent of 1.3 million lorries per year.

Fret SNCF has created an organization specifically designed for combined transport, based on trunk route trains, hubs, and transbordement.
Trunk route trains
These trains directly link 2 combined transport yards, when volumes pass a certain threshold. These general "night trains" are rapid, non-stop trains running at 120, 140 and even 160 kph.
Hubs
The connecting hubs are located at strategic points where traffic flow is concentrated.
They are designed to facilitate the grouping of trains coming from different starting points, and to marshal trains transferred to final destination yards. Networks of lines serving most French regions radiate from these hubs.
3 existing hubs:
- |
The Ile-de-France hub (PNIF, Paris region), installed for CNC at Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, serves 40 yards in France and abroad, via 185,000 wagons per year. |
- |
The European Hub (PNEU), (PNEU), installed for Intercontainer in Metz-Sablon, handles 150,000 wagons per year. |
- |
Cortax, installed for Union Internationale Rail Route (UIRR), links the Benelux countries to Italy and Spain, via France. |
Trans-shipment yards These specialized yards are designed for the transfer of Intermodal Transport Units (containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers) from one mode of transport to another.
