Carriage of Heavy Goods
Vehicles
The
Alpine rail-motorway, opened in November 2003, makes it possible
to transport HGVs between France and Italy via rail. It offers
a new service that goes beyond conventional carriage and
combined transport. The principle is that complete heavy goods vehicles
(tractor + semi trailer) or semi-trailers alone are carried through
the Alps on wagons. The service includes a comfortable carriage
for drivers.
This service was developed in partnership with:
Fret
SNCF and Trenitalia for rail operation via a joint company, Autostrada
Ferroviaria Alpina ;
The
AREA motorway company for the trans-shipment hub at Bourgneuf/Aiton
and RFI for the hub at Orbassano
Modalohr,
the wagon manufacturer. An innovation.
The
French and Italian governments, the Rhône Alpes Regional Council
and the Savoy Departmental Council.
During the experimental period, up until 2006, 4 daily shuttles
will make the run of:
175
km from Aiton, near Chambéry to Orbassano in the suburbs
of Turin.
3
hours travel time
35 to 50,000 HGVs will be able to cross the border in this way
each year. Essentially, these are tanker lorries, slightly lower
in height than the average for the rolling stock on the road. Nearly
all HGVs will have access to the Alpine rail motorway by late 2006,
when current construction is completed, in particular enlargement
of the Mont-Senis rail tunnel.

Quick and easy loading
Registration
operations (verification of the size of the vehicle, document inspections,
tolls) are handled at the entrance to the hub.
Wagons
are loaded immediately afterwards by unhooking the HGV rigs. Semi-trailers
are loaded on one wagon, while the tractor is loaded on the next wagon,
with another tractor. This is a simple, quick operation for the driver.
