RID (or Regulations concerning the International carriage of Dangerous goods by rail) is the regulation covering the international rail transport of dangerous merchandise on the European continent.
Drafted by the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTIF), covering 46 countries, RID became law on the European continent by directive 2008/68/CE transposed in french law, each member country having done likewise.
In order to guarantee the safety of everyone and protect the environment, RID establishes the list of so-called dangerous goods :
There are 13 classes of dangerous merchandise. Each of these is covered by specific provisions. Do not hesitate to inquire!
Dangerous goods designate merchandise which naturally present a safety dangerous to persons and property and/or are likely to harm the environment.
RID lists the obligations incumbent on the shipper and the carrier of the dangerous goods. They concern, in particular :
As for any company expediting, transporting or receiving dangerous merchandise, we are subject to this regulation. A safety adviser appointed internally and several regional agents constitute a unit of experts ensuring respect of the RID by Fret SNCF. Concurrently, some thirty regulations, implemented within Fret SNCF, complete the RID provisions.
